Blog on ISA arrest:
8.00pm : Senior Sin Chew Journalist and Chairperson of Penang Chinese Papers Journalists Association Tan Hoon Cheng (33 years old) has been arrested under ISA -original sopurce of info: Tan's brother. Tan was speaking to Sin Chew's superior on the phone from her BM< home when police came in. She must have been snatch away without any time allowed for last words with her relatives and colleague. The superior called back after the phone call stopped suddenly. No one picked up the phone. The news spread like wild fire. Within 30 minutes a crowd of over 100 built up in front of Penang's Police HQ at Penang Rd. Similar crowd said to congregate in front of Perda Police HQ in BM.
Journalists, NGOs, political parties came to the police HQ along Penang Rd. They were from all ethnic groups and all parties -BN & PR parties. Penangites seems to be united to condemn this unreasonable ISA arrests. The analysis was: the politician spewing out racial poison was only suspended from his party posts-but the reporter who reported the news and the paper that reported about them were targetted for real punishment. MCA, Gerakan, DAP, PKR and PAS representatives were present to take turn to condemn the arrest. Notables from them include CM Lim Guan Eng, PAS Parit Buntar MP Mujahid.
Liew Chin Tong, Ooi Wei Aik and Jason Ong had a PC to tell the journalists assembled that they had only a phone call with the Police Chief who confirmed that Tan was picked up by Bkt Aman police under ISA. She was not inside the Penang Rd Police station-probably in Perda Police station.
10.00pm a candle lights vigil was started by GMI members, with singing which attracted participation from others.
11.00pm News of Teresa Kok being arrested under ISA filtered through. Many shook their head in disbelief. It was as though there was a plan/conspiracy going on. Many were speculating on how many more may be arrested. But the tension was not racial-as there are all community represented in the crowd there. The crowd built up to about 500 by mid night.
FRU came in a police truch-but they station themselves inside the police station.
