Talk on the country’s judiciary system

THE Socio-Economic and Environmental Research Institute (SERI) is presenting a talk on the country’s judiciary system at the Penang Lecture 2007.

State Education and Economic Planning Committee chairman Datuk Dr Toh Kin Woon said retired lawyer and "The Penang File" editor Lim Kean Chye would deliver his lecture entitled 1988 and After: The Dismantling of Justice.

Lim, 88, an early anti-colonialist before the country’s independence, will talk about the 1988 judicial crisis following the sacking of Lord President Tun Salleh Abas and several Supreme Court judges, and its impact on the development of the judicial system.

Dr Toh said the judiciary was recognised for its importance in keeping the executive and administrative powers in check in a democracy.

“Lim’s lecture may give us a good look at how the present judicial system is affected by the 1988 crisis,” he said.

The lecture will be held at E & O Hotel at 2pm on Dec 8.

Admission is free but as seats are limited to 300. Those interested in attending the lecture are advised to call Rohana on 04-2283306 or e-mail rohana @seri.com.my for registration.

Registration closes on Dec 5.
